Kent Roers

Roers Companies Co-Founder and Owner Kent Roers was a recent guest on The Jake & Gino Show, the flagship podcast of real estate entrepreneurs Jake Stenziano and Gino Barbaro. Known for deep dives with industry leaders, the show explores how real estate professionals build wealth and scale impact.

In a candid conversation, Kent shared how he and his brother Brian grew Roers Cos. from a 30-unit apartment deal in 2012 into a vertically integrated powerhouse with over 100 projects and $4 billion in development across more than a dozen states.

Individual Investors Over Institutions

Much of the episode focused on a central decision that shaped Roers Cos.’ trajectory: prioritizing individual investors instead of institutional capital.

“People ask, ‘When are you going to become a big boy and start working with institutions?’” Kent joked. “But we’ve raised consistent capital for 12 years from people who trust us. It’s these relationships that drive our business.”

That early bet paid off. Roers Cos. now sees many repeat investors, with the average partner involved in eight projects. This model supports a highly personal approach to communication and performance reporting to keep investors informed throughout the process.

From Getting Laid Off to Breaking Ground

Kent opened up about the career turning point that sparked Roers Cos. After being laid off from a financial services firm in 2011, he decided it was time to strike out on his own.

“I had no experience managing or building apartments,” he said. “But I had hustle, belief, and a network of people willing to take a chance on me.” With the help of family, neighbors, and a stack of handwritten notes, Kent and Brian raised $1.5 million to build the first 30-unit apartment complex in western North Dakota.

Market Strategy and Long-Term Vision

Kent also weighed in on the current multifamily landscape, including rising vacancies, concessions, and high construction interest rates. Despite 2024’s supply imbalance, he sees a strategic window.

“We’re in a corner right now — and that’s where you pass in the race,” he said. “We’re still building because when supply tightens again in 2027, we want to be in prime position. That’s how we delivered 120% returns in 2022 — and we’re setting up for that again.”

Kent also shared how tools like AI, EOS (Entrepreneurial Operating System), and strategic site selection are helping Roers Cos. operate smarter. With these tools, Roers Cos. is pushing for better outcomes for investors and residents.
